Dialog between me and Miss Brill
I just moved in to Miss Brill neighborhood and ran into her several times. She seemed to like me. I think so because this morning she brought me a welcome pie and invited me to her house. I think she wants to be my friend, she seems lonely. In the afternoon I went to her house, she let me in.
And said:
- I thought you might not come.
- Why wouldn't I have tea with such a refined lady? - I asked.
- You aren't aware of what they say, are you? - said Miss Brill
- No, I am not. And wont listen, because I respect you.
Now, tell me do you live here by yourself?
- Yes, my husband died and he was very rich, he left me the house. And you, do you have wife. - Asked Miss Brill showing interest.
- No, I don't. Don't you feel alone in this house? - I asked changing subject and showing my concerned.
- No, I have...my....scarf colection (?) and my... plants. That's plenty of company, you might say.
- Oh...I see...and do you have many visits?
- No, I go visit them...at the par... because of the..rumors..I... - said Miss Brill starting to sob.
- Miss Brill, I am sorry If I offended you, I shall let you and come another day.
- Don't young man! Please, stay... talk to me... I... can't stand the void ..in my soul and this old house.
- No.. I... I should go. It's been a pleasure Miss Brill..
This being said, I left. Several days later, they found Miss Brill body in the house. She was found dead, lying in her bed, hugged to one of her scarfs, hugged to the silent hope for company.
